On 16 June 2023, the DAO Suisse Association was officially established, with the purpose to strengthen Switzerland’s position as the world’s leading centre for decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs).
The association brings together key players from different sectors, including DAOs themselves, universities, law firms, start-up’s, and individuals – all committed to bringing Switzerland to the forefront of the DAO landscape.
But What Actually are DAOs and How Will They Matter?
The Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) is a fast evolving concept in the web3 ecosystem that enables communities, corporations, and other collective organizations to operate and govern themselves without the need for centralized leadership.
This is made possible through the power of blockchain technology, which allows for transparent and decentralized decision-making processes. With DAOs, the management and administration of an organization can be carried out by its members, creating a new paradigm of decentralized governance and fostering a more inclusive and democratic approach to collaboration within the DAO ecosystem.
DAOs are still in their early stages of development, but they have the potential to change the way we live and work. They can be used to create communities, launch projects, and manage resources in a way that could lead to more efficiency, transparency, and last but not least more democratic structures than those found in traditional organizations.

Some Examples of Pioneering DAOs in the Crypto Space:
MakerDAO is a DAO that issues the DAI stablecoin, a cryptocurrency pegged to the US dollar. As a pioneer in decentralized finance (DeFi), MakerDAO operates using blockchain technology, allowing users to access financial services without relying on traditional authorities. By enabling users to vote on decisions and ensuring transparency through blockchain, MakerDAO offers a secure and innovative alternative to the traditional financial system.
Compound Finance is a decentralized finance protocol that enables users to lend and borrow cryptocurrencies in a transparent and permissionless way.
Lido Finance is a DAO and Liquid Staking protocol that was formed prior to Ethereum’s “Merge” phase. It played a significant role in the introduction of staking in the Ethereum ecosystem. Lido allowed participants to stake their Ethereum and earn rewards while operating within a decentralized governance framework facilitated by the DAO structure.
